Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is now very
commonly diagnosed. This is partly because of increased incidence
and partly because it previously went undetected. It also seems to
be used as a 'catch-all' ailment by doctors - to be given as a
diagnosis as long as the symptoms are a rough fit. However, there
is still little that regular medicine can do for it, compared with
the methods of alternative medicine which offer a great deal.
What Is Irritable Bowel
Syndrome?
IBS is commonly characterised by:
- Alternating constipation and diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Bloating, which usually subsides overnight
However, IBS can affect any part of the gut - from throat to
rectum, so symptoms can include:
- A feeling of fullness in the throat
- Indigestion
- Bloating after meals
- Loud abdominal gurgling
- Flatulence (wind)
- Bowel movement stimulated upon eating
- Disturbed sleep
- Anxiety or depressive symptoms
Symptoms can vary over time.
Treatment From A
Doctor The regular medical professional says
there is 'no known cause' for IBS - hence they even denied its
existence for years. Their recommended treatment can include:
drinking lots of water (2 litres a day), high fibre diet introduced
slowly, avoiding allergens such as coffee and milk, avoiding
alcohol, avoiding large meals, eating regularly. Medicines they
recommend include antispasmodics, bulking agents sucah as Fybogel,
charcoal tablets, and antidepressants.
