3. Diet For Irritable Bowel
Syndrome
Back to A Summary Of Every
Treatment On This Site
As general rules for Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
- Avoid foods which are know allergens and those which
might exacerbate the IBS. Common allergens include: wheat
in all form, except perhaps whole wheat berries or spelt
wheat; all dairy foods - milk and cheese are worst, sheep's
less so, butter generally less so.
- Avoid any other foods you know aggravate the IBS. These
can include very fibrous foods, eg raw vegetables, which
may aggravate the condition; bran is scratchy and so may do
so too.
- Sugar can aggravate IBS and also feeds candida which
may be present.
- Alcohol is often a trigger for many for Irritable
Bowel Syndrome.
- Be cautious with spicy food.
- Supplement with bowel flora, also called 'probiotics'
such as Bio Multi-flora for IBS.
- Keep a diary of what you eat and of any reactions you
have which affect the Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
This helps you to check back and see what caused them.
4. Treating The Causes Of Irritable Bowel
Syndrome
In most cases of IBS we have come across, the sufferers are
either stressed or have emotional issues of one type or
another. You may well know that your IBS is made worse by
stress, or that it started after a traumatic event - eg, a loss
of a loved one, redundancy, divorce or other shock. You will
not permanently get rid of the IBS until you either learn to
deal with stress better (or remove yourself from the stressful
situation) or 'deal with' the shock you have suffered more
pro-actively.
We describe two approaches to dealing with stress in these
pages: How To Eliminate Your IBS Forever In Just Ten
Minutes A Day by A J Babington, and
Conquering Stress by Chris Green.

Three other approaches you might like to try for the
emotional side of IBS are:
- Meditation
Transcendental Meditation is a 'quick and easy' method of
meditation which has given many stress sufferers a quick
result in dealing with stress. It is not for 'meditation
purists' as it is a bit of a 'quick fix'; but it is a
practical method which can often get a result. it costs a
few hundred pounds and requires you spend about 15 minutes
twice a day practicing it.
- Counselling/psychotherapy
- Hypnotism or Neuro Linguistic
Programming. This can work like a
dream - or might not. You have to try it to see if it
works for you. Plan for 4 or 5 sessions.
