Summary
On this page is a summary of treating Irritable
Bowel Syndrome with herbs and naturopathy. For a
little more detail on each step, see the next few pages.
1. Do see your doctor for a checkup if you have IBS. Do get
the help of a qualified herbal, naturopathic or nutritional
Practitioner skilled in treating IBS, if you can. (Be cautious
with medical doctors who have done a quickie course in some
natural therapy.)
2. If IBS is giving you pain/discomfort/bleeding/bloating
use herbs to help. Use:
Colit Capsules -
for relief of IBS symptoms, take up to 12 capsules spread over
the day. You can take 2 or 3 at a time. Users have reported
benefits within an hour or two. For support/prevention take 1-2
capsules 3 times a day.
Cautions: Take 2 hours away from drug
medications as their is a small possibility of reducing their
effect.~

Slippery Elm
Tea - use a level teaspoonful to make a mug of
'tea' (like thin porridge). Sip, hot or warm to help
the IBS. Very soothing - again, many IBS
sufferers report relief of their IBS symptoms after 1-2
hours. Take 2-3 times a day. Very safe - drink more if you
want. For prevention/support drink a cup a day. (It is also
nutritious and easily digested.)
Cautions: None.
Use both these herbal aids, and see which works best for your
IBS symptoms. You certainly can use the two together.

Cayenne
Capsules - Cayenne will
sometimes stop bleeding dramatically. It has been used very
successfully for bleeding from the colon in IBS cases. (You
must have bleeding from the colon checked out by a
doctor.) The dose depends on how bad the bleeding is.
- If bleeding is slight and occasional,
try taking 1 capsule, 3 times a day with food or a
drink.
- If more severe, try taking 6 capsules
spread over the day.
- If even more severe, you might need to
limit food intake as the fibre in the food in not allowing
healing to take place. You can get onto vegetable and fruit
juice

3. Diet: Avoid food which upset
Irritable Bowel Syndrome which , most commonly, are
sugar, wheat, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, bran. Any thing
else which you have observed affects you.
4. Emotions/Trauma. Think about how stress
affects your IBS, or if it started with a trauma or shock. Ways
of dealing with these issues include: meditation, counselling,
psychotherapy, and also building the nerves up with herbs can
help.
5. When the bowel has calmed down, consider one of the
90-day Colon Programmes, to help improve colon
function and keep it healthy into the future. This is a
preventive measure to help avoid future IBS.
A little more detail on each of these methods follows.
